The rock towns of the Broumov region are truly vast. Besides the Adršpach–Teplice Rocks complex, you can also walk through the rock labyrinths at Ostaš or the smaller rock area of the Jirásek Rocks at Bischofstein. To thoroughly explore the extensive ridge of the Broumov Walls, covered with thousands of rocks and cut by dozens of ravines, several days will not be enough…
The breathtaking wildness of the Adršpach rock city will amaze everyone. Thousands of rock towers, deep gorges, exposed viewpoints on cliff edges, narrow passages between cool walls, small lakes, and waterfalls. You can combine your visit to the Adršpach Rocks with a longer hike through the Wolf Gorge into the neighboring Teplice Rocks. On the western edge of the Adršpach Rocks, you can visit Starozámecký Hill with the ruins of a castle. You can also climb the nearby Křížový Hill with its Stations of the Cross and enjoy stunning views of the rock panorama and the distant Krkonoše Mountains.
Take a trip through the Teplice rock labyrinth, which is literally breathtaking in places. Before reaching the center of the Teplice Rocks, beneath the monumental walls of the Temple Rocks, you will pass through the long Entrance Gorge. The rocks on either side will grow steeper, taller, and more inaccessible… Eventually, the valley narrows into a tight, inhospitable gorge. In the past century, several sections had to be widened due to how inaccessible the Teplice rock city was. Beyond the gorges of the Rock and Temple Squares, the rocks open up again, the Krakonoš Garden beckons, and you see the sun once more. You are now beneath the Temple Rocks. Continue along the edge of the rock city and close the loop through the deep Siberia Gorges. On the way back, you can also climb the steep stairs to the ruins of the Střmen rock castle. Completing this full tourist loop is a demanding trip, but the experience of wild natural beauty is unforgettable for visitors of all ages.
The true wilderness of Broumov. The long ridge of the Broumov Walls offers numerous hiking routes. Outside a few more popular spots, you will be virtually alone. Must-see highlights include the unique sandstone formations – the Slavenské Mushrooms, the Baroque Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows on Hvězda, the deep and mysterious Kovář’s Gorge, and exposed viewpoints like the Vulture’s Nest and Slavenská Viewpoint, where you’ll feel like a soaring bird of prey. The Stone Gate, which will take your breath away, is another highlight. Silence among the towering rocks can be experienced here practically all year round.
The legendary Ostaš Table Mountain, with its smaller rock towns, rises near Police nad Metují. Two relatively challenging walking circuits take you past a series of bizarre rock formations. Children in particular will be thrilled by the Devil’s Car, the Mound of Death, the Traitor’s Head, or the Cat Castle. The maze-like narrow corridors lead to airy viewpoints along steep cliffs.
The ruins of the Gothic castle Skály lie in the heart of the Jirásek Rocks. Climb to the top on the sandstone rock and enjoy the distant views. The Black Pond adds a romantic touch, and the nearby Bischofstein Chateau with its restaurant offers a perfect stop for tourists. Stunning views are also rewarded after climbing the lookout on the opposite Čáp Hill (786 m / 2,579 ft), where the Adršpach-Teplice Rocks spread out before you.
Broumovsko is not only about rock towns; it is also a cultural landscape crisscrossed by cycle paths connecting towns and villages with numerous historical sites. Dedicate one of your days to exploring Broumov itself. The impressive Baroque Broumov Monastery complex offers a rich history and can easily occupy a whole day. The year-round accessible guided route is suitable for families, allowing you to peek behind the massive monastery walls, which hide a unique copy of the Shroud of Turin, a rare monastery library, and the richly decorated Church of St. Vojtěch. Curious visitors can enjoy the Children’s Gallery Lapidarium or the medieval monastic scriptorium with interactive tours. In the freely accessible monastery garden, you can relax under a centuries-old oak, explore modern art at the Gallery House, and see a functional historical bowling alley. The monastery café Dientzenhofer offers excellent coffee, while the restaurant U tří růží serves modern cuisine. Renovated monastic guest rooms are available for overnight stays.
Another highlight is the Cemetery Church of the Virgin Mary, one of the oldest wooden sacred buildings in Central Europe. Remarkable for its architecture and interior decoration, the church is entirely constructed without a single nail, using a timber frame of massive oak beams. The entire wooden structure of the nave, chancel, ceiling, and roof forms a single, perfect carpentry masterpiece that has endured for centuries.
The group of Baroque churches from the 18th century, designed by architects Kryštof and Kilian Ignác Dientzenhofer, is rightly called the Baroque pearl of the region. Each church is an architectural gem. The initiative for their construction came from Abbot Otmar Zinke. Thanks to his efforts, the landscape was also enriched with small sacred monuments – crosses, sculptures, figurines, and Stations of the Cross. The Broumov landscape, with its impressively integrated churches, captivates visitors with a unique Genius loci. The entire church group has recently been designated a national cultural monument and has been successfully renovated in recent years.
