“Meziměstí and Sokołowsko” Route

Meziměstí – Mieroszów – Sokołowsko – Hynčice – Meziměstí

Description of the route

The route begins at Meziměstí’s historic railway station, a large Art Nouveau building that houses a theatre and gymnasium, as well as a remarkably extensive Railway Museum. The station is itself an important piece of railway heritage. From the station, follow the road past the former Meziměstí Château towards the village of Vižňov. At St Anne’s Church and the open-air geological exhibition in the Vižňov Intra-Sudetic Basin Geopark, turn left onto the local access road and continue to the hamlet of Nowe Siodło. Ride through the hamlet towards Mieroszów. Just before the railway underpass, turn right onto Tkacka Street and follow it to the main road towards Wałbrzych. At the upper end of Kowalowa, leave this road just before the bridge over the Ścinawka River by turning right onto the waymarked Mieroszów Green Cycle Route. Follow the route uphill to the upper end of the village. It then continues along field and forest tracks, passing the ruins of an old woodland spa before reaching the spa village of Sokołowsko and the striking architecture of the Grunwald Sanatorium. In the centre of Sokołowsko, where there are several inviting cafés, join cycle route G8. Follow it past the Church of Our Lady Queen of the World, the Orthodox Church of St Michael the Archangel and the Leśne Źródło inn. The route then climbs through the long valley of the Mały Sokołowiec stream to the ridge of the Javoří Mountains and the Pod Špičákem saddle. You will also pass the unusual Skałka Jola rock formation along the way. At the saddle, turn right and continue along route G8, descending towards the ponds in the hamlet of Radosna. Turn right at the junction and follow the forest track over the saddle beneath Javorový vrch and down into the valley of Uhlířský potok. Follow the stream through Uhlířské údolí on cycle route no. 4002, passing the Pod Jelením žlabem, Horní Červeňák and Dolní Červeňák forest ponds before reaching the fish farm in Hynčice. Turn right onto the road and follow waymarked route no. 4020 through Hynčice, passing an abandoned ignimbrite quarry. At the crossroads in Jetřichov, the route turns right and leads past the Baroque Church of St James the Greater before returning to Meziměstí railway station. Alternatively, continue a little farther to the Walzel Centre, a multipurpose complex with a restaurant and a range of sports and leisure facilities.

Warning: There is a challenging descent of around 300 metres from the junction below Javorový vrch.
